World-class sustainability.
Kajaani, the green home of LUMI
The LUMI supercomputer provides the computing infrastructure to the LUMI AI Factory. LUMI is located in the city of Kajaani in north-eastern Finland. Known as a pioneer in telecommunication and internet technologies, Finland offers safe environmental and political conditions and low operating costs, making it an excellent location for data centers. In addition, the total electricity cost for industries is one of the lowest in Europe.

One of the most eco-efficient data centers in the world
Reducing CO2 emissions is a globally critical target, on which the location of the EuroHPC machines has a significant impact, as supercomputers consume plenty of electricity. The data center in Kajaani has an abundant supply of low-price renewable power: LUMI’s energy consumption is covered by 100% renewable electricity.
Waste heat utilisation further reduces the costs and CO2 footprint of the area. LUMI’s waste heat is used to heat up hundreds of households annually in the city of Kajaani. Additionally, LUMI’s carbon footprint has been further reduced by choosing a brownfield solution and energy-efficient systems in the construction phase.
Impactful research and innovation activities
One of the purposes of the data center is among others to provide a better understanding of climate change and tools for fighting it. Our data center powers world-class research that addresses today’s greatest challenges, helping us better understand our world and create solutions for a more sustainable tomorrow.
A wide range of science cases are progressing daily on the current LUMI system, achieving ground-breaking research results in climate research, physics, molecular dynamics, AI and large language models, to name a few examples. By enabling green research and innovation, the LUMI AI Factory contributes to solutions that have a positive impact on climate and the environment.
