AI for Science and Collaborative EU Projects Access to LUMI AI Factory

The AI for Science and Collaborative EU Projects Access provides eligible scientific users, public sector organisations and partners in Horizon Europe or Digital Europe projects with free of charge access to the LUMI supercomputer for AI-enabled research. Allocations are granted for six months and support scientific workflows that rely on ethical AI, machine learning, foundation models or generative AI, including large language models. Following technical and expert peer review, successful projects receive computing resources tailored to their approved workload, together with technical onboarding and user support.

Service features

Services based on the EuroHPC JU AI for Science and Collaborative EU Projects Access call, including:

  • Compute: Access to LUMI computing resources for AI-enabled scientific research, allocated in node hours according to the project’s technical requirements and the outcome of the evaluation
  • Storage: Project storage and scratch space arranged during onboarding, in line with the technical requirements of the approved workload
  • Duration: Six-month allocation period
  • Cost: Free of charge for eligible users
  • Support: 
    • Technical onboarding and user support for access to and use of LUMI resources
    • Further technical expertise and AI Factory services may be available through the LUMI AI Factory ecosystem, depending on the project’s needs and service availability

Intended Activities / Supported Workload

AI for Science and Collaborative EU Projects Access supports AI applications for science, with a focus on ethical AI, machine learning, foundation models and generative AI, including large language models. It is intended for scientific research activities that rely on AI models as part of the research workflow. The access mode is available to scientific users, public-sector users, and industrial users participating in Horizon Europe or Digital Europe research and innovation projects.

Reporting Requirements

EuroHPC JU reporting requirements apply throughout the project:

  • Project Scope and Plan submitted in the prescribed EuroHPC JU template
  • Progress Report submitted during the allocation, using the prescribed template
  • Final Report submitted after completion of the allocation, using the prescribed EuroHPC JU template
  • Non-confidential technical outline with scalability results and benchmarks
  • Prominent acknowledgement of LUMI AI Factory/EuroHPC resources
    No sensitive business information or trade secrets

Access/Output Requirements

  •  Access requirements: Applicants submit a proposal describing the scientific objectives, AI methodology, technical requirements, implementation plan and expected impact, using the applicable EuroHPC JU documentation and templates.
  • Evaluation: Proposals undergo a technical review and expert peer review against:
    • excellence;
    • innovation and impact; and
    • quality of implementation.
  • Output requirements: Successful projects must fulfil the applicable reporting and acknowledgement obligations. Confidential project information should be handled in accordance with the call documentation and relevant institutional procedures.

Target groups

This access mode is intended for:

  • Scientific users, whether their work is funded nationally, at European level or otherwise
  • Universities, research organisations and other scientific institutions
  • Public-sector users conducting AI-enabled scientific research
  • Industrial users participating in collaborative R&I projects funded through Horizon Europe or the Digital Europe Programme

Industrial users whose planned development activity is not eligible for this computing resource call may instead apply through the “AI for Industrial Innovation Access modes”: Playground Access, Fast Lane Access, and Large Scale Access.

Pricing

The computing resources are provided open and free of charge to eligible users. A short, non‑confidential report (for example, a brief abstract of the use case and main outcomes) may be requested for public funding accountability, but detailed technical results and proprietary know‑how remain confidential and do not have to be disclosed.

Request process

The call is continuously open, with predefined cut-off dates (as per: https://www.eurohpc-ju.europa.eu/eurohpc-ju-call-proposals-ai-science-and-collaborative-eu-projects_en#details).

Proposals submitted by a cut-off date are evaluated through technical and expert peer review. Awards are decided on a first-arrived-first-served basis among positively evaluated proposals.

  • Time to access: up to one month after the applicable cut-off date
  • Allocation duration: six months
  • 2026 remaining cut-offs: 30 October and 11 December, 10:00 CET
