Can you present us with an AI development idea that makes sense, has (business) potential and is technically feasible? If you think so, and we think so, then the European Union and your country will invest in your idea by paying for the LUMI AI Factory’s resources you need. You can use the money you save to support your project or business. The value of our support for large scale computing tasks can be remarkable. We hope it reduces your risks and encourages you to think big and act quick!
“Free of charge” means you do not need to pay for computing time, training and skills development, access to data sources or expert consultation available in LUMI AI Factory. It does not mean that you can use all resources as much as you wish. We will help you estimate the amount of resources you need, and to apply for the required resources from the EU or your national funding provider. Don’t worry, it is worth those one or two meetings and a few days’ waiting!
There are no free lunches, so here’s what you need to know and do to get access to LUMI AI Factory’s services free of charge:
Tell us who you are
You must be an officially established startup or an SME (Small to Medium Enterprise), as defined by the EU. Please see more information above on this page under ‘Who can use our services’. You must be based in the European Union or an affiliated country. Individual persons or temporary teams are not entitled to our services. Free-of-charge services are not available to Large companies – if you are one, you can also just pay for our competitively priced services, or look for a collaborative R&D project funded either by EU or a national funding agency.
What we need to know
You do not need to pay for any part of the services, but you need to provide your resources – ideas, skills, experts with working time and ambition to reach your goal. Your AI project idea will be evaluated against criteria such as technical feasibility, risk analysis etc. – no sweat, we will guide you through these! With our support, your needs for resources will be estimated. With this estimate, you can apply for a permit to use our resources from the EU or national funds. When applying for resources from a national funding agency, you are responsible for knowing that your company has not used up all national state aid available to companies (maximum 300.000 € in three years’ time).
What you get
You will usually need to start with a small computing pilot project to ensure that your development idea is suitable for a supercomputer and that you are able to use it. When that is proven, you can get access to more resources. LUMI AI Factory’s resources are available for RDI (Research and Development) purposes. To deploy and offer your results to end users 24/7 and/or commercially, we can help you to find a platform and deploy there. All IPR (intellectual property rights) remain with you.
When you’re done
When you are finished with your EU-funded computing project, you need to fill in a short final report listing main features of the project (e.g. project team, computational problem executed etc). It is possible to sign an NDA to cover the sensitive parts of your project. If you have applied through a national funding mechanism (eg. Business Finland computing capacity grant), you will need to report the value of the resources you used as “state aid” to your national authority. We will inform you of the final value of the resources you used. Finally, when telling the world of your results, you are expected to acknowledge the role of LUMI AI Factory and EuroHPC JU.
Let’s do it free of charge!
We don’t want your IPR or shares in your company. We want you to succeed and prosper. It is in Europe’s interest. Make us an AI development project offer we can’t refuse! Start by contacting us.

Access opportunities
For all the eligible customers*, computing services are available through EuroHPC JU calls, including “AI for Science and collaborative EU projects” (eg. Horizon Europe and Digital Europe programme). In addition, in Finland it is currently possible to apply for nationally funded RDI collaborative projects with academia, as well as access resources commercially by paying for usage based on consumption.
Startups and SMEs* can also apply for free-of-charge computing access through EuroHPC JU’s “AI for Industrial Innovation call”. This call offers so called Playground, Fast Lane and Large Scale Access modes. More information is available here. In Finland, it is possible to apply also for a Business Finland computing capacity grant, which is subject to state aid rules.
The available computing capacity options and conditions may depend also on the specific service and the country of the applicant.
- Customers from LUMI AI Factory consortium countries (Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Norway and Poland) can use both EuroHPC JU calls and national access opportunities. Please contact us via our contact form and we will find the best solution for you to get access.
- Customers who are not from a LUMI AI Factory consortium country but from the EU Member States and countries associated with the Horizon Europe programme* can access computing services only through the EuroHPC JU calls. Please contact us and we will help you get access.
