Aila AI model powered by LUMI advances the future of weather forecasting
1 min read
How can artificial intelligence improve weather forecasting? The Finnish Meteorological Institute’s Aila AI model explores this question by combining weather data with the computing power of the LUMI supercomputer.
Trained on large weather datasets using LUMI’s GPU resources, Aila aims to complement traditional forecasting methods with AI-driven predictions. During Finland’s exceptionally cold January 2026, the model showed promising results, particularly for temperature forecasts with lead times of less than two days.
The Aila use case demonstrates how AI and high-performance computing can support the development of new forecasting methods and contribute to advances in weather prediction.
